One of the most popular methods of waste management is skip hire. There are different types and sizes of skips that can be better suited different projects. We offer various sizes of open skips, which are the more 'traditional skipshape' ranging in size from 2-16 yards, we also offer roll on roll off skips which are rectangular in shape. These skips are also known as RoRo skips and our RoRo skips range from 15 yards to 40 yards.
What CANNOT Be Put In A Skip?
With skips being so popular, it's important to remember that you can't just dispose of anything with a skip, many things cannot be put into a skip. Some you might already know and some could surprise you. Here is a list of a few items that CANNOT be disposed of via a skip.
The following list does not contain all prohibited materials, so if you are unsure if your waste can be placed into a skip please give us a call on 01202 870833 and we can discuss your waste management solution further.
Many people are aware of the dangers of asbestos. It was used in construction for many years, being a very plentiful resource that is extremely fire/heat resistant, it was an ideal choice for many building materials and filters.
Whilst many are aware that asbestos cannot be placed into a skip, it was include in various items that you perhaps would not have considered to be anasbestos risk. For example, howstuffworks.com wrote that some vinyl wallpaper from before 1980 can contain asbestos.
It is quite astonishing to read about all the different ways asbestos was used. A surprising use of asbestos was from Hollywood in films. As nesasbestos.co.uk wrote, asbestos “was used by the ton in some of the most famous movies of the twenties, thirties and forties". It was used to create artificial snow in film.
Asbestos can be present in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000 because it was banned in 1999. If you're concerned about asbestos within your building, you can give our team a call and discuss our asbestos removal services.
Your Old Computer
If you're having a home/office clearout, old computers may appear to be an ideal candidate for the skip; after all how could such an everyday item beconsidered hazardous waste? However, computers can be very hazardous, as recycling-guide.org.uk wrote, “A single computer can contain up to 2kg of lead".
Following the waste hierarchy system, you could prevent your old computer from becoming waste by finding a use for it, perhaps by donating it to charity. If you choose to donate your old computer to charity, remember to take any appropriate measures required within the 1998 Data Protection Act. If however, you would like to dispose of your old computer, you can make use of our waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) services.
If you have old car tyres, you cannot dispose of them in a skip. This is because without proper disposal they can be hazardous to the environment. If you're interested in recycling your tyres, recycling.co.uk has some useful information that may be able to help you.
However, tyres have various uses to prevent them from becoming waste. One such use is the classic tyre swing. However, before creating your swing, make sure you have the necessary permission to do so. In 2014 the Daily Mail reported that Woking Borough Council issued "an enforcement notice because the swing had been fixed to the ground". They argued that because the swing was fixed to the ground, it was a development.
So if you are planning on reusing your tyres in a tyre swing, check with your local council in case planning permission is required.
What CAN Be Put In A Skip?
Whilst many items cannot be disposed of via a skip, many items of non-hazardous waste can be disposed of through the use of a skip, such as our roll on roll off skips or our open skips.
Some of the most common uses for skips are various home projects, where depending on the size of the project you may wish to hire a small skip or a large skip. Another common use for a skip is a construction project.
Construction projects can generate a large amount of waste. We offer various large containers to manage your waste. RoRo skips range up to 40 yards, so if you're expecting a very large amount of waste to be deposited in a single skip, a RoRo skip is an ideal solution. However, if you're expecting to deposit different types of waste, for example wood waste and metal waste, you could hire two smaller RoRo skips to segregate the waste.
If you are unsure if your waste can be disposed of via a skip, give us a call on 01202 870833 and we can discuss your waste disposal service in more detail.
