A fast track design and build contract for London South Bank University saw the refurbishment of the main reception and lift lobby areas of McLaren House and the creation of social spaces for students on the ground and first floors of this student accommodation block.
Alterations and adaptations were carried out to former office and common room areas to create the new contemporary space now incorporating a café. Mechanical and electrical adaptations and additions were required, and these included modification and extension to the existing ventilation system with new grilles and diffusers, along with new separate lighting and power distribution.
A memorable and striking feature of the 'new' McLaren House are the 2 floor to ceiling tree-like structures connecting the social space and reception area, providing drama and interest to the now colourful and inviting student space. Carefully planning the execution of these works ensured that there was no disruption to this busy reception area.
